(Virtual) Karmiel USA 2021

Thursday, September 2 - Sunday, September 5

Our 2021 virtual dance camp has ended.  Thank you to everyone who participated!  Have a fantastic rest of your year, and see you in 2022!

You can check out the teaching videos and special session videos on the 2021 Videos page.

Welcome to all of our wonderful dancers!  Here you will find a registration form for this year's dance event, as well as general information and pricing.  This year, the way we handle registrations and payments will be a little different, for multiple reasons.

Our Former Camp Director & Hostess

Ruthy Slann (z''l), our beloved director, hostess, and dear friend, passed away on June 5th this year, surrounded by her family and loved ones, after her battle with cancer.  We are all deeply saddened, and she will be sorely missed.  One of her parting desires was that the camp still go on without her.  We, the 7 staff members she assembled over the last several years, are continuing camp in honor of her.  She took care of so many different aspects of camp, it is quite daunting to fill her shoes, but we will do the best we can!

Virtual Decision

After a great deal of deliberation, we decided to hold a Hybrid/Virtual camp, similar to last year's Zoom virtual dance event.  A small group (mostly locals, like last time) will meet again in Charlotte, NC to dance in a large social hall, with a camera set up to stream the dance floor to everyone on Zoom.  We'll have some decorations and try to give it a Karmiel USA camp feel as much as possible.  (We already have some great ideas on how to make it special, and will continue to brainstorm and develop our plans in the weeks leading up to the event.)

For those wondering, we were initially planning to hold an in-person camp this year at The Mountain (our usual location).  We tried very hard to determine a way it could work, but unfortunately COVID-19 is still a big problem, and there was no way we could accommodate both vaccinated and unvaccinated dancers in a way that would allow everyone to feel safe and comfortable.

By holding the virtual dance camp, we can still honor Ruthy's desire for camp to go on this year.  We will include a tribute to her, with a special memorial video (prepared by Meliss), and dance some of Ruthy's favorite dances.

Weekend Schedule

Here is our expected weekend schedule for this year (subject to change):

Thursday, September 2, 2021

7:30 pm - 10:30 pm (EST) - A Tribute to Ruthy

We will begin on Thursday, September 2, with a special tribute to our beloved camp director of 25 years, Ruthy Slann. Ruthy's dearest wish was for camp to continue and, by holding camp virtually, we can still honour that wish until we are able to reconvene at The Mountain (hopefully "l'shanah haba'ah!").  Thursday evening will start at 7:30 pm (all times listed are US Eastern Time zone) with a special commemorative video celebrating Ruthy and her legacy, created and introduced by Meliss, followed by some of the dances that Ruthy loved the most and that remind us of her. The session will continue until 10:30 pm, and include some dance instruction, so that everyone can join in.

On the following days, we will dance more of Ruthy’s favourites, teach new dances and take requests from local and "virtual" dancers.

Saturday, September 4, 2021

Sunday, September 5, 2021

12 pm - 4 pm (EST) - Teaching, Review, and Requests

We will end the weekend with a final Sunday session from 12-4 pm filled with more teaching, a review of all the dances taught during the weekend and as many requests as we can possibly fit in.

There is no cost for Thursday, but you are invited to contribute to the Ruthy Slann Scholarship Fund at https://www.lirkodforever.org.

For Friday to Sunday, the cost for in-person dancers is $15 per day or $40 for all three days.

For online dancers, you will receive Zoom links (a day or two before the event) as part of registration, however we would be very grateful for a suggested donation of $10 per day or $25 for the full virtual camp.

All revenue from this year's camp will go directly towards the deposit for our in-person camp at "The Mountain" next year!

This year, Joanna has graciously offered to act as treasurer until we get a separate account in place for Karmiel USA. We've added a convenient online option to this page to make it easy to send her money securely using PayPal (you may see her account listed as "Joanna Blackwelder Tutoring"), but if you prefer you can contact her directly at joannablackwelder@gmail.com to discuss alternative arrangements (such as mailing a check, using a money app, etc).

You can donate securely through PayPal (no PayPal account necessary) by using either of these options:

To register for the virtual Karmiel USA 2021 event, please fill in the following form and submit it.  When you do you should see a green success message on the form, and receive a confirmation email within a few minutes.  If not, please check your Spam folder.  If you still can't find it, please reach out to the website administrator at info@karmielusa.com with your registration info so we can make sure you are registered.

Note that even if you are local and planning to attend in person, you may still want to register online so that you will get followup details and after-camp summary emails, in addition to the Zoom links.  Certain information will only be shared with registered attendees via email and not on this website.

Also please note that registering and paying/donating for camp are currently two separate actions.  Registering is through this Wix-hosted website, while payment/donation is through the PayPal website (using the button above).  You do not have to do both at the same time, but please ensure you get your payment in before the event starts.  If you are unable to do this, please reach out to Joanna (joannablackwelder@gmail.com) to see what other arrangements can be made.

You should receive an email within a few minutes.

We may use the information you provide on this form to contact you again for future dance camps or special dance events, but you can unsubscribe at any time, and we will not share your information with others.

T-Shirts / CDs / MP3s / Buttons

We have new 2021 Camp CDs and Camp T-Shirts available for purchase this year!  Those attending in-person will be able to purchase them on-site.  Those attending virtually can reach out to Rebekah at bowlinre@gmail.com to order a CD or T-Shirt.

CDs - CDs are in limited supply, but contain all of the dances taught last year and this year, plus some extra dances that Ruthy loved or that we thought would be fun to include.  (Livia really likes our music selection! It's a great CD.)  They are $10 each (plus postage if being shipped).

MP3s - After the weekend, we will provide the dance music files (same songs as on CD) at no extra cost to everyone who has paid or donated any amount.  Consider it a "Thank You" for contributing towards future camps!

T-Shirts - We have new T-Shirts this year!  But they are also in limited supply.  We're not currently planning another run (of making shirts), and we're not planning to do another virtual camp either, so these will essentially be limited edition shirts.  First come first serve, so be sure to order soon if you are interested.  They are $15 each, or two for $25 (plus postage if being shipped).  We have black or blue, and either T-shirt or Tank top.  Here are some photos, as well as sizing charts.

Camp Buttons are designed and created by Terry Abrahams, our wonderful camp button maker, and have a unique background each year.  We are planning to make the new 2021 Camp Buttons available for FREE to those who register by August 15th!  (We will request your mailing address later.)  To get your button after the deadline, you can reach out to her directly for payment arrangement at tabrahams@tampabay.rr.com.

We will be sending out Zoom links to all registrants a day or two before camp.  For any questions in the meantime, please contact Livia at liviaburghardt@yahoo.ca or Sarah at sarahazucena@gmail.com.  They are both on staff and would love to talk to you!
